Widely used material for pinning insect specimens. BioQuip’s white polyethylene foam is consistent in texture and surface, does not fracture, and may be pinned into repeatedly without showing pin holes. A size 00 pin may be inserted without bending or aid of pinning forceps. White foam is approximately 5/16″ (.306″ or 8mm) thick, identified as 4PCF, indicating a density of 4 pounds per cubic foot.
Polyethylene foam sheets are pre-cut to a standard size for use as pinning bottoms in Cornell, Calif. Academy, and U.S.N.M. insect drawers. They are easily cut to exact size requirements with a razor blade and straight edge. #1027GA / #1027GB adhesive is a preferred medium for applying foam to drawer, box or unit tray bottoms.
When ordering 1028NT special cut foam, note that the minimum order is 10 pieces of the same size. Pricing is per square foot or fraction thereof.
Due to adverse effects of chlorinated hydrocarbons on polyethylene foam and many adhesives, use of #1196 or #1196F DDVP fumigants in drawers, trays or boxes with foam pinning bottoms is recommended.
White plastazote foam #1028P is also available as a pinning material. It is denser and more opaque than 1028N polyethylene foam.
