Lightweight Malaise Trap, Townes Style – Overall height 5.8 ft., length 5.4 ft. (176, 165 cm)
Malaise traps are widely used in biodiversity surveys because they efficiently trap a wide range of flying insects. They frequently function effectively as long-term sampling tools.
This pop-up, free-standing Malaise trap is so easy to assemble that it can be repositioned anytime and used on a short-term basis. The Townes-style trap is fabricated with a white roof, the mesh size of its white roof is 108 x 32 mesh/square inch and black Polyester no-see-um fabric (96 x 26 mesh/square inch) to catch minute insects, including parasitic wasps. The interception area is 165 x 110 centimeters (5.4 x 3.6 ft). If trays with killing agents are placed underneath this interceptor, the trap also functions to a limited degree as a flight-interception trap (FIT) or window trap, sampling specimens (i.e. some beetles) that drop or fly down after hitting an obstruction.
In February 2012, a minor modification was made to the Lightweight Malaise trap. The supporting frames of re-modeled traps are much stronger structurally. A framework of shock-corded, lightweight fiberglass support poles permits quick installation. Simply hook the clips onto the poles provided. This easy assembly feature is a valuable time saver for those who need to deploy several Malaise traps or whose time in the field is limited. The catch is easily removed by unscrewing the collecting bottle from the trap’s connecting ring.
Twelve tent pegs, four 3 meter guy ropes (9.84 ft.), three 500 ml polyethylene collecting bottles, and a Nylon carrying bag are included. Dimensions are 176 cm at the top end, 110 cm at the lower end, 165 cm long, and 180 cm wide (5.8, 3.6, 5.4, and 5.9 ft., respectively). Weight with all accessories is 5 lbs. (2.3 kg).
